چکیده

Acquisition of an animal gene by microsporidian intracellular parasites Correspondence Any scientific heroes? Hermann von Helmholtz, of course, and Richard Feynman. Both were physicists. Helmholtz was also both a physiologist and a psychophysicist, perhaps the best ever. Feynman was neither but his curiosity and his clarity are inspirational. His ability to observe was not bad either — remember the Challenger enquiry and the O ring? I cannot resist adding Julesz and Campbell, reluctant bedfellows though they may have made.

Horizontal gene transfers in vicious parasites

Microsporidia are obligate intracellular parasites whose genomes have been shaped by an extreme lifestyle. Specifically, their obligate intracellular parasitism has resulted in the loss of many genes and biochemical pathways, but these reductive processes have been often offset by the acquisition of several genes by means of horizontal gene transfer (HGT). Until recently, these HGTs were all fo...

Plasma Membrane-Located Purine Nucleotide Transport Proteins Are Key Components for Host Exploitation by Microsporidian Intracellular Parasites

Microsporidia are obligate intracellular parasites of most animal groups including humans, but despite their significant economic and medical importance there are major gaps in our understanding of how they exploit infected host cells. We have investigated the evolution, cellular locations and substrate specificities of a family of nucleotide transport (NTT) proteins from Trachipleistophora hom...

Reduction and Expansion in Microsporidian Genome Evolution: New Insights from Comparative Genomics

Microsporidia are an abundant group of obligate intracellular parasites of other eukaryotes, including immunocompromised humans, but the molecular basis of their intracellular lifestyle and pathobiology are poorly understood. New genomes from a taxonomically broad range of microsporidians, complemented by published expression data, provide an opportunity for comparative analyses to identify con...

Microsporidian genome analysis reveals evolutionary strategies for obligate intracellular growth.

Microsporidia comprise a large phylum of obligate intracellular eukaryotes that are fungal-related parasites responsible for widespread disease, and here we address questions about microsporidia biology and evolution. We sequenced three microsporidian genomes from two species, Nematocida parisii and Nematocida sp1, which are natural pathogens of Caenorhabditis nematodes and provide model system...
